Monday Morning Photo Essays Totally Rock*

Saturday morning, a big truck came and dumped a pile of rock in our front yard.

If you have ever wondered what a 10-ton pile of rock looks like, wonder no more. Because it looks like that.

Since we had all this rock, we figured we had two options: 1) Leave it there and wait for the compliments on our beautiful new rock-hill feature to come rolling in; or 2) Put it in a few planting beds.

We chose option 2.

The process went like this: Shovel some rock into wagon.

Haul rock to designated rock area.

Use wagon’s awesome dumping feature to dump rock into designated rock area.

Use rake to evenly distribute rocks.

Repeat.

At the end of 5 hours, this is what we had to show for our efforts:

Rocks around the new shrubs in front of the house.

Rocks around the tree and ground cover in front of our house.

Rocks under the deck behind our house.

A significantly smaller pile of rocks in the front yard.

Ben’s stamp of approval.

We collapsed on the couch at the end of the day with plans to do more work on Sunday, providing we had cooperation from both the weather and our muscles.

When we woke up Sunday morning (11:30 is still morning, technically!) we were pleasantly surprised by the not-so-bad condition of our muscles. We were unpleasantly surprised, however, by this:

Ben says: “WTF, you guys? It was totally 80 degrees yesterday and today there’s snow?”

I say: “Watch your language, mister.”

Ben says: “I don’t know if we’re going to be moving any of these rocks today. But look how pretty they look with all the dust washed off of them.”

I say: “You have something on your nose. You might want to take care of that before you embarrass yourself in front of the whole Internet.”

Ben says: “Whatever, Mom. I just remembered how much I love snow! Let’s play!”

I say: “Can we go back inside now please? It’s friggin’ freezing out here Mister Benjamin.”

So instead of shoveling more rock on Sunday, we stayed inside, cuddled up under some blankets, and made a big pot of chili.

It was a pretty good weekend, all things considered.

*Get it? Rock? Oh, man, I am just too funny for my own good.

That was a lot of stone hauling! I like the use of the wagon…I wouldn’t have thought of that and like an idiot would have gone and bought a wheel barrow.

You’re not far from Denver are you? The snowstorm forced the Rockies to practice indoors over the weekend.

i like the wagon with built in dumping feature. I wonder if I could get one for my walk up apartment.

Oh the snow, the snow. I wondered to myself this morning how your rock shoveling event went because of the weather….

And I totally would have gotten your trivia right – if I wasn’t so busy and late to the game.

    You stayed warm I hope!

i love your wagon! once i helped my dad move about that much rock over the course of two days and a wagon with a built-in dumping feature would have been very helpful. we just used a wheelbarrow and by the end of the first day i felt like death…

i can’t believe it already snowed. sucks to be you, but good for ben!

I’m impressed with your rock hauling abilities! We actually need to order up a giant mountain or dirt to fill in the hole where the pool was…but it might be waiting until spring!

Well, holy schmokes… That had to be a shock. I love fall and its schizophrenic weather.

Sigh – and the west is starting the long-haul of winter. A little bit of 70-degree weather, then snow. Repeat ad nauseum until November when it becomes a little bit of sunny-but-freezing followed by snow, repeat until April.

You and Tim are ROCKING rock haulers.

It’s gorgeous! The rocks, and the beds anyway. That white stuff is scary – what is that? We don’t get that here in Alabama.

I am so impressed. Do you want to come do our yard?

Also, wasn’t that snow the randomest thing, ever??

ALSO: I am still totally in love with your dog.

What a rockin’ good time! I wish I was there to help shovel rocks. That is a lie. It’s more fun to just see the pictures. I wasn’t hung over though so I totally COULD have helped you!

I can’t believe it snowed! Ben is so cute in the snow!
